Drives that remembered, “S” or “X” had files that your entire team could access, but only one person could edit at a time a few years ago. You could also copy them to your local machine and edit them there, but this is not always possible. It is done by the current user, and this provides a simple workflow; one must at least wait for the other person to finish; newer versions even offer to notify the person when the file is edited.

-Indexing and Searching Power: Gone are the days of having to search through dozens of levels of folders.

-Integration with Windows applications: The ability to retrieve a file from SharePoint via the File > Open dialog boxes found in Windows programs such as Microsoft Office.

Microsoft has also retained the legacy drive concept, which means you can still open an Excel file from drive X, edit it, and save it as before. However, SharePoint scans the file in the background before re-verifying it and exporting it to you. All of these features are still available and functional, but SharePoint is now more than just a fancy drive.

While Google, Apple, Dropbox, and others improved their cloud services, Microsoft was on its own, with SharePoint becoming an important component of the Microsoft Office 365 product and cloud-based pairing with Office subscription.
